Project for School Innovation

At-Risk Consortium

To address the dropout crisis, PSI collaborates with four charter public high schools that specifically serve students at high risk for dropping out. PSI has facilitated four years of study groups and published two guidebooks with the schools detailing common, effective practices for serving at-risk youth. To inform more effective supports and programming, we have worked with Harvard University to develop tools and data that measure the impact of these four schools on student development of essential socio-emotional skills that are not measured by traditional assessments. We have presented our results and the successes of the four schools to over 300 educators statewide through workshops and conferences, and have published the findings on CD and here through our website.

The Consortium’s Mission:
➢ To advocate for and provide educational solutions that serve the neediest students who have been “weeded out” of traditional schools

➢ To guide other alternative schools, programs, and individuals that serve students at risk of dropping out of high school.

➢ To provide reliable, appropriate, and vetted data regarding the impact of our schools on the success of our students

What We Know

➢ The dropout rate – on a national level – has been inconsistently reported and under-recorded, resulting in a population of “invisible” youth.

➢ The dropout rate presents a social, economic, and academic crisis that negatively shapes the future of MA and the vitality of our communities while challenging individual success.

➢ Alternate assessments, data, and methods are needed and viable for students for whom the traditional education models don't work.

➢ Many students need social and emotional supports in order to succeed academically.

➢ Our four schools have each developed successful, replicable practices that re-engage students who “drop back in” to complete their high school education.
